The challenge in this piece was formatting the editorial content. Most of the editorial I received was in the form of photos with captions. Creative use of color, typography and white space gave the section a interesting modern look that was an improvement over previous versions. The client was happy with the outcome and it's still one of my favorite pieces.
In addition to formatting the editorial, I also laid out the ads based on the manifest while another designer created the cover.
This is the first page of a four-page section. The challenge of this page was in putting the editorial content organized in a format that was easy to read. The page was meant to be colorful and attractive to parents of young children.
The colorful background had to be light enough so that the copy could be read, even color copy. And the copy could not split between entries. The result was a nice piece with a lot of well organized information in a fun layout.
I was provided with original artwork for the cover of this section, but the artwork was formatted horizontally while the space was vertical. The logos for the cover required a white space in the background. I achieved these objectives while giving it a wintery, festive look.
The center section (pages four and five) was provided by the client, but it wasn't received until the day it was due to go to the printer so I created the layout and placed the ads and editorial quickly to meet the deadline. It was also necessary to be creative with the editorial, because there was not enough copy to fit the space.
Special sections that were smaller than a full page required more work. Advertising was sold by zones, so instead of just one section, there were up to ten different sections that ran in different papers.
No editorial was provided for this section, so I researched animal-related events in the central Ohio area on the Web to find copy. After determining the size of each section, I coordinated with others in the creative services department to save space in each edition for this section.
The Holiday Recipes special section was another zoned section, so several different versions were created. The recipes were provided by readers. Photos featuring food and holiday scenes, combined with festive colors and artwork, resulted in an attractive layout that was well received by the editor and the sales department.
